Out With Mother, length 3 minutes
The video plays continuously creating a disturbing tension and provoking questions about representation of ‘mother’. How can this questionable ‘subject’ be re-presented? Mothers are ‘outsiders’, excluded from discourse, trapped in stereotypical representations.
Multiple images run simultaneously. The baby in the sling carried by a mother, a lonely figure on a beach and almost invisibly the indexical shadow of a woman in a domestic space. These shadowy images are accompanied by the distorted, and disturbing sound loop of a child calling for his mother.
Playing with multiplicity, the artists’s aim is to re-appropriate and re-present mother and ‘out’ the maternal in new ways, questioning the way that contemporary Western society depicts her in the binary of either ‘good enough’ or ‘not good enough’.
